So why use our PerfectSound Rocktray instead of a cheaper universal rack tray like from musiciansfriend or other on-line music store? Well, from our first hand experience, the universal rack trays are tempting to use because of their lower cost, but you will run into several problems along the way... 1) there is not a back/rear brace to eliminate the bowing/sagging of the tray, thus putting more stress on your plastic module cases (yikes!) and also stressing the bottom mounting screws and threads embedded also in the plastic module case. Both are situations we prefer not to have in our prized Rockman setups. 2) Even if you do find a universal tray that does have screw holes that almost line up there will be additional issues to deal with. 3) If the screw holes work with one module I've seen that often times when adding the second module the spacing for the module cases is not correct and prevents both modules from resting comfortably side-by-side and so the tray holes need to be elongated or sometimes re-drilled. Not good! 4) The bottom module mounting screws will be problematic due to the incorrect countersink on the universal tray, thus not fitting quite right and then 2 more issues arise, the end user oftentimes opts for finding his own screws that he thinks will work and the results (we have witnessed) are too long of a screw damaging the PCB inside the Rockman module ($$) and also by the usual protruding screw head on the bottom side of the tray that will scrape the tops of the next lower rack tray units mounted immediately below in the rack. 5) Okay, let's say you can deal with the previous 4 problems I have pointed out... Have you seen how deep those universal trays are? E-gads! Those guys are 10 inches deep. That's almost twice as deep as the standard Rocktray! So now, I am supposed to physically try to hold a 1/4 cable plug in my fingertips and try to position it into the correct jack in the back of my rockmodule while trying to see around my hands and cable into a 5 inch depth of darkness all at the same time in a space that is only 1-3/4 inches high?!?! And that is just one cable hookup! What about running the rest of your signal chain, and when that is done, now you get to run all the midi cables in an even smaller space due to the signal cables that are already there? Good luck, Slim Jim! Okay, enough said. You get my drift I'm sure. IF you are versed mechanically and pay attention to the details and have a lot of patience you can get a universal tray to work for you in an okay, sagging, less than perfect manner. So it's up to you to decide what you are willing to put up with. Personally, I'd rather play through them than play with them, but of course I'm biased... ;) Thanks for listening. Rick |
